Wide Bay Burnett Regional Water Supply Strategy
The Wide Bay Burnett Regional Water Supply Strategy is being developed to provide a framework for meeting water demand in the region for the next 50 years. Recent extended drought conditions have also highlighted the need for planning to provide for ongoing water needs and to secure the water supply in the region.
A partnership between state government agencies, local government and key stakeholders has been established to develop the strategy, with the department as the lead agency.
The strategy will:
- anticipate potential water requirements during this period and provide the preferred scenarios for responding at the regional level
- propose short-term water supply solutions that do not compromise longer term options
- assess measures for managing demand and options for increasing the efficiency of water use in the region.
The strategy will be consistent with the outcomes of the Wide Bay Burnett Regional Plan 2007–2026.
The draft strategy, which is currently being developed, is expected to be finalised for Government consideration in the first half of 2012 with subsequent release for public consultation.
