North Queensland Regional Water Supply Strategy

The North Queensland Regional Water Supply Strategy (NQRWSS) will provide a whole-of-region approach for managing the region’s water resources. It will provide a framework to meet future urban, industrial, mining and agricultural water needs over the next 50 years, while aiming to achieve optimum economic, environmental and social outcomes.

The strategy will align with outcomes sought through the National Water Initiative, as well as other regional statutory and non-statutory plans such as the Water Resource (Burdekin Basin) Plan 2007, the Townsville/Thuringowa Strategy Plan 2000, the Northern Economic Triangle Infrastructure Plan 2007–12 and the Burdekin Dry Tropics Natural Resource Management Plan 2005.

Studies are being undertaken to help develop the strategy and a draft is expected to be finalised for Government consideration in the first half of 2012 with subsequent release for public consultation.
