Far North Queensland Regional Water Supply Strategy

The Far North Queensland Regional Water Supply Strategy was released in March 2010. This followed an extensive consultation process after the release of the draft strategy in September 2007.

The strategy addresses future water supply requirements in the Atherton Tablelands and Cairns regions, a need identified in the Far North Queensland Regional Plan 2009–2031 (Department of Infrastructure and Planning).

The strategy includes solutions to meet Far North Queensland’s urban, rural and industrial water needs over the next 50 years, and was developed in partnership with local governments and other stakeholders to achieve the best possible environmental, social and economic outcomes. It complements the existing water resource plans and resource operations plans for the Barron and Mitchell basins, and will be regularly updated to ensure it remains relevant in the years ahead.
