Water trading and accounting
Water trading is the buying and selling of water separate to the sale of land. This enables users to buy water to expand their operations, or sell water they do not need.
Metering is necessary to provide a clear picture of water-use patterns to enable effective planning, allocation and management of the resource.
By establishing a framework for water use accounting, these rules ensure there is an accountable and auditable trail for the movement of water use within and between water licences.
