Mapping products
Land use datasets are available state-wide 1999 for all catchments in Queensland, and also for selected catchments in 2004, 2006 and 2009. The nominal scale for mapping years is 1:50,000 in the coastal zone and high intensity land use areas, and 1:100,000 in the pastoral zone and low intensity land use areas.
A map showing the currency of land use mapping in Queensland is available for viewing.
You can access and download these datasets through the Queensland Government Information Service. Simply search for "land use mapping" in the "type of data" search box, after restricting your search to "cadastral and land planning" in the topic category field.
2009 Land Use Datasets
QLUMP has recently updated 28 of the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) catchments to 2009 in support of the Reef Protection Program. These catchments cover approximately 22% of the State, stretching from the Wet Tropics in the north to the Burnett–Mary in the south, and form a large proportion of the intensive land use areas of Queensland.
Mapping products include:
- Updated land use mapping for 2009
- Improved 1999 land use mapping
- 1999–2009 land use change mapping
Reports which present and summarise the land use mapping are available for each Natural Resource Management (NRM) Region, as well as an overall summary.

2006 Land Use Datasets
Updated land use mapping including revisions to the original 1999 dataset and a 1999–2006 land use change product are available for the South West, Border Rivers / Maranoa Balonne and Condamine NRM Regions.
Similarly, the South-East Queensland (SEQ) NRM region has been completed (in part) for 2006, including revised 1999 and a 1999–2006 land use change product. Note that at the sub-catchment level only the following catchments have been mapped including: Noosa, Maroochy, Stanley, Caboolture, Pine, Bremer, Logan and Albert. The remaining catchments of Brisbane, Lockyer, Coomera, Nerang and the Islands remain at 1999 only.
2004 Land Use Datasets
Land use change mapping between 1999 and 2004 and reports have been completed for seven reef catchments including: Johnston (PDF, 1.6M)*, Tully (PDF, 1.0M)*, Murray (PDF, 437K)*, Burdekin (PDF, 1.0M)*, Fitzroy (PDF, 1.9M)*, Pioneer (PDF, 433K)* and Plane (PDF, 543K)*. 2004 mapping is based on the Australian Land Use and Management Classification (ALUM) Version 6 (PDF)*. The products for this project include: improved land use data for 1999, 2004 land use maps and land use change between 1999 and 2004.
1999 Land Use Dataset
The 1999 land use dataset is a consistent and seamless state-wide layer that is fundamental for natural resource management in Queensland. It also forms the base for mapping land use change between 1999 and 2004. The 1999 land use data is further described in a technical report (PDF, 1.3M)*.
1999 mapping covers 79 major drainage catchments in Queensland and is based on the Australian Land Use and Management Classification Version 5. Figure 1 shows the Primary land use classes across Queensland. Datasets for each catchment were mosaiced to produce the statewide land use map.
