Clearing firebreaks
Management Activity
Firebreaks are natural or constructed areas that form a discontinuity in fuel loads for fires. Firebreaks provide access for fire fighters and a control line from which a fire can be controlled. Firebreaks may include roads, barriers of green vegetation, mechanically cleared or ploughed areas and areas of fuel reduction burning.
The direct impacts of clearing firebreaks may include:
- Reduced groundcover
- Reduced canopy cover
- Reduced fuel loads for fires
