Pasture management
Land Practice
Pastures are grown and managed primarily for the purpose of livestock grazing. Livestock grazing accounts for the largest area of agricultural land use in Australia. Grazing is carried out on both native and improved pastures. Pastures maybe dryland, irrigated or ponded. Pasture management is undertaken in combination with other land practices to achieve the ultimum goal of marketing a valuable product at a profit while maintaining or improving the productivity of the land.
Pasture management may involve the management activities of:
- Clearing firebreaks
- Grazing land stocking rate
- Irrigation with fresh water
- Irrigation with effluent water
- Old pasture growth removal
- Overland flow mitigation
- Pasture preservation
- Pasture improvement
- Pest animal control
- Pesticide application
- Ponded pasture use
