Intensive animal production

Enterprise or production system

In this context, intensive animal production includes cattle feedlots, piggeries, poultry farming for egg and meat production and some specialist sheep wool production.  It does not cover dairy farming or aquaculture which are dealt with separately.  Pigs,  poultry and sometimes fine wool sheep are raised in sheds designed to provide a stable environment protected from the elements, while feedlot cattle are typically raised in outdoor pens.  All of these intensive animal production systems require high feed inputs as animals do not forage for themselves.
