In this context, aquaculture refers to the farming of aquatic animals or cultivating of aquatic plants under controlled or semi-controlled conditions both indoors and outdoors. It includes the breeding, hatching, rearing and cultivation for sale of these aquatic organisms. In Queensland the major species farmed include oysters, crocodiles, freshwater crayfish, marine prawns, barramundi and silver perch. Aquatic organisms can be grown in fresh or saline water in tanks, ponds or net-pens either within a pond or set out in a bay or open ocean. For the purposes of this guide only land based operations are considered.
